I recently came across a useful tool for web designers at dummyimage.com. This is a placeholder image generator that accept various inputs via a GET request such as:

http://dummyimage.com/500×200/000/fff – This url automatically creates a 500 x 200 pixel place holder image with a black background and white foreground text. See the generated image below. Check out http://dummyimage.com.
